MY SHIFT TONIGHT IS longer than usual, but I told Alonzo I’d work a double because my hours were cut at the A.C. and heating repair. I guess it’s a good idea I took this waitressing job, because they’ve been trimming everyone’s hours this winter and if I have to keep bouncing from one crap job to another, I’ll be a drug mule forever. It’s the only guarantee I’ll keep money in my pocket.

Tonight, I’m distracted. Tomorrow night, I’m having dinner with Bastien.

For the past twenty-four hours, when I’d think about my long-lost bestie, I couldn’t help but feel a hope renewed. Bas has a good thing going. He sits as chairman on Hope After’s board and lives in one of the swankiest neighborhoods in southeast Texas.

We didn’t talk much after the meeting, but we agreed to meet tonight for drinks.

My fingers tremble as I take my phone out of my apron and text him I have to work later than I thought.

Bas: You’re not canceling, are you? Cause I’ll wait all night if I have to.

I smile as excitement sets in.

Mina: Not canceling. Just letting you know.

Bas: Bet.

As I slide my phone back into my apron, another waitress taps me on the shoulder.

“Alonzo’s here,” she says, pointing to the VIP section. When I turn around and glance in his direction, I see Alonzo watching me. He thumbs a finger, summoning me to his section.

I sit my tray down, wiping my hands on my apron, and head up.

As I approach, the bouncer removes a barricade, allowing me to enter. When I do, Alonzo holds a glass out toward me.

“No thanks,” I say, eyeing the glass of clear liquor. From time to time I’ll have a few drinks on the job, most of them with Alonzo Harris himself. It’s how we became so friendly with one another. I’ve unloaded a lot of my shit on him. In return, he makes sure my glass is at least half full. I walk into the section of La Revolución reserved for only the elite who visit. Every man and woman in this space is baller and champagne status.

I take a seat out of the way of everyone, at a corner table for two no one ever wants. Alonzo slides comfortably into the chair across from me.

“How’s life?” he says, sitting his glass between us.

“I’m still with it,” I say. He frowns.

“Yeah, but for how long?”

He looks at me, and a pensive look spreads his face. I shrug.

“I’ve been looking into alternatives,” I say finally.

“Good. stuff that’ll pay you what you’re worth,” he says. “You’re too smart and too talented to waste your time serving drinks and all that other bullshit.”

He crosses his leg and raises his glass to his mouth.

“I’m looking for a legit job. Good pay. Nothing to do with...”

“Ahht. No. I don’t need to know the details.” He waves his hand after sitting his glass on the tabletop. “I trust you,” he points a finger at me, “If you say it’s good. It’s good.
